This is the third pattern of the Ukrainian Heart Trilogy, and raised money to feed the Ukrainian people in this difficult time. See also the Heart of Ukraine Hat and the Soul of Ukraine Hat Patterns.

Vyshyvanka shirts are rich examples of Ukrainian embroidery. The traditional motifs and colors chosen vary by area of the country and have had a renaissance among the younger generation in Ukraine. It can tell the story of the wearer and protect the wearer from harm. It seems appropriate to adapt some of these motifs to knitting. I am not Ukrainian nor do I pretend to be an expert on the stories behind the motifs. I just know they are beautiful and the Ukrainians need all the beauty and protection they can get right now. The main motif is a Vyshyvanka star motif that I have adapted to form a heart.

Vyshyvanka Day is celebrated on the third Thursday of May.

Three sizes are included. Small, Medium, Large. Small in photos

Abbreviations:
K = Knit P = Purl rep = Repeat st = Stitch
rnd = Round K2Tog = Knit 2 Together

Notes:
-If a taller Cowl is desired, add up to 3 Rib rnds.
-If a shorter Cowl is desired, both Latvian Braids can be omitted
-If you really don’t want to tackle the Latvian Braid,
substitute 1 rnd of Knit in CC followed by 1 rnd of (firm) purl in CC.
-The CC Purl line above the Leaves band can be left out. I like it because on days when I
don’t want the cowl up high on my face, it easily folds under on the purl round.
-Some folks like to do rib on a size smaller needle, that is just fine! Go for it.
