This hat came out of a need for a hat that was not too slouchy and not too tight. One night, I decided to experiment with just a slight variation on a knit cap and out came this waffley hat. To me, it looks like a waffle, or maybe a beaver’s tail.

It’s a very simple pattern, easy enough for a beginner but with enough speed and intrigue to keep a more advanced knitter occupied.

It works up nicely in any worsted weight yarn. The Malabrigo Rios has so many gorgeous and interesting colors. But if you want a slightly grippier hat, go for something not as sleek.

I decided to put this pattern into words as my contribution to String Theory Yarn Company’s “Christmas in July” event in the hopes that it will inspire some gifts or even some charity knitting this holiday season.

Please feel free to message me with any questions or concerns with the pattern.
