Inspiration
This set of patterns is inspired by the many wagtails and parakeets flocking our Amsterdam neighbourhood. Additionally the shape of the red parakeet honours the monumental work of Matisse La perruche et la sirene, that can be admired at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. For the story behind this pattern you can read more in my blog!

Motifs
With my variation of the pied de poule motif I designed a capelette that can also be worn as a cowl. The matching hat and wristwarmers carry adjusted wagtail motifs considering the different stitch pattern (wrist warmers) and clear sight of the shapes (hat).

Technical information
One size is included in the pattern. Though all items can easily be adjusted by adding multiples and repeats of the motifs.

The shaping of the cape is done by using 3 different sized needles:
needle (US 7) 4,5 mm: 20sts x 28 rounds = 10 cm (4 in)
needle (US 6) 4 mm: 22sts x 29 rounds = 10 cm (4 in)
needle (US 4) 3,5 mm: 24 sts x 30 rounds = 10 cm (4 in)
all swatches in stockinette colorwork

specification of the yarn needed - 3 colors:

  • cape: main color (purple) - 298 m (155 gram); contrast color 1 (sunset) - 211 m/110 gram; contrast color 2 (red) - 10 m/5 gram.
  • wrist warmers: red (cc2) - 192 m/100 gram; sunset (cc1) - 10 m/5 gram; purple (mc) - 10 m/5 gram.
  • hat: sunset (cc1) - 180 m/90 gram; purple (mc) - 50 m/25 gram; red (cc2) - 10 m/5 gram.

Other materials needed:
a blunt needle for sewing in the ends

All items are knitted with two colors max per round except for the part where the parakeet is added. Special instructions with photo’s are given to perform this extra piece of colorwork nicely.
Mainly knitting 2 colors per round the pattern provides you a nice knit with which you can relax. For the cape & wrist warmers no shaping by increases or decreases is needed. Knitting all 3 items will leave you little or none waste yarn.

The cowl is testknitted and approved by Deborah (pitknitter) my wonderful Ravelry friend! Thank you so much!

Happy bird knitting!
