This knitted mid-weight winter hat features a band of cable owls with beaded eyes and a fuzzy rolled brim that gives it a bowler look. Short rows shape the front between the cable owls band and the rolled brim.

Instructions are included for two adult sizes: SM for a head circumference smaller than 22” (55.88 cm), and ML for a head circumference larger than 22” (55.88 cm).

The Winter Owls Bowler is knit from the crown down and designed for the advanced knitter. It’s great for using up leftover yarn and buttons and beads from your stash. You’ll need 16 beads for the eyes of the owls (2 for each of 8 owls), plus one button or bead (or combo) for the centre of the crown.

Instructions are for two colour options: Denim Blue and Twilight Purple. If you are buying new yarn, you will need to purchase one skein of Malabrigo Rios and one skein of a fuzzy lace-weight yarn to make one hat. If you are using yarns from your stash, you will need approximately 175 yards (160 meters) of Yarn A (worsted weight merino) and about 78 yards (71.3 meters) of Yarn B (lace-weight) to make one hat. The yarns listed in the pattern are what I used to make the original hats (yarns purchased in 2024 or earlier); please use the listing as a guide to weight and colour combinations, since some of these yarns may no longer available new (2026). Any lace-weight yarn may be used in the rolled brim, as long as it has a desired amount of fuzziness (halo). I used a mohair/silk blend yarn for the Denim Blue hat and a pure qiviut yarn for the Twilight Purple hat.
