Notes

After finishing my 2023 epic mini skein project, there were ALOT of leftovers from SpaceCadet’s mini skeins. I loved how my first “Inclinations Shawl” turned out, which had also used leftover mini skeins from a previous epic mini skein project. Since I gave the shawl away, I wanted to make another one. This time, I have enough to make two shawls. One will have the striped gradient, like the pattern. The other will be a non-striped solid gradient flow. At least we’ll get to see how SpaceCadet’s mini skeins look in both ways. I split each mini skeins in half, the best that I could. I even tied the each month’s mini skeins together and winded them into cakes. I may start both shawls at once and switch between the two before settling on one to finish and then the other.

… That was the plan. But after hearing about SpaceCadet closing, I decided to make the second shawl a completely different pattern. Meanwhile, I can still make this pattern with the stripes gradient it was meant to be.

First attempt… I casted on with confidence! Everything was going smoothly until I was about to add November’s skein to the shawl. I noticed I started with the wrong end of December’s skeins, casted on with its 1st mini skein instead of the 5th. No wonder why November didn’t match! As I frogged the shawl, I wondered how it would look if I started with a different month.

Second attempt… I recasted with March and April skeins. At first I was liking the way it looked. But as I continued onwards, the colors were clashing. I tried to push forward, knitting 8 months of mini skeins into it. But once I added July’s skein, I was ready to frog. So second attempt was a bust!

Third attempt… I went back to the plan of starting with January and December’s skeins. I made sure I grabbed the correct ends of both skeins and casted on. Unlike my first shawl, the second group of colors didn’t start with extra yardage that resulted with more months being part of the first group. In fact all of the months were about the same yardage to their months they were paired with. By the end of the shawl, it was neck to neck with June’s 5th mini skein and July’s 1st mini skein. The winning month to do the icord bind off was July.

It saddens me that the pink and purple would not be shown as much while I wear the shawl but I still love the hues of the yellows, greens, and blues. All 2023’s mini skeins colors have flowed beautifully. I know that I won’t be able to knit this with SpaceCadet’s mini skeins again. So I will never give this shawl away.
