11 November used to be called Armistice Day - the anniversary of the end of the First World War in Europe, “a day of sad remembrance and joyful ending of war, and of a commitment to preventing war in the future.” That meaning has become lost, as the militarized west has renamed it Remembrance Day and turned it into a celebration of war.

Since 1926 pacifists have made their own poppies to remember without supporting war culture, and in 1933 the first white poppies were produced by the Co-operative Women’s Guild in the UK to honour this purpose.

This pattern is available free to anyone who would like to make a white poppy to wear for Armistice Day.
