This is where the Orange Trail takes you, in the Adventure Knitting: A Day in the Woods ebook. There are 4 different brim pattern options, 4 different hat body patterns, and 3 different crown patterns, which can all be mixed and matched with each other. All patterns are for any gauge, and custom sized to your head.

Adventure Knitting: A Day in the Woods is written as a Choose-Your-Own-Adventure-style pattern collection, with all items and stitch patterns, etc, as choices you can make. So the hat pattern is the “Orange Trail” in the book, which you’ll follow within each of the sections to make your hat. There is not a separate hat pattern within the ebook.

All Adventure Knitting item patterns (hat, cowl, mitts, and coffee cup sleeve) are for custom sizes, any weight yarn, your choice of one or more colors. All items are worked in three sections of modular knitting, joined with short rows - no picked up stitches and little or no seaming (depending on your choices).

How much yarn you’ll need for the hat will depend on your yarn weight and desired size - usually, 1 skein should be enough, but you may want some extra yarn for contrasting color(s).

All 20 stitch patterns are both written and charted, and detail photos are included for all options, as well as details about all eight sample knits.

The pdf includes a complete ebook plus a DIY foldable, bindable, covered print book!

It’s organized to prevent unnecessary printing of extra pages - print only the pages you need, as explained on the cover page. You can print 100% of the pattern collection and information (including book making tutorials, sample photos, stitch pattern photos, and notes) on 15 printer pages (10 of those pages will fold into the 80 page book). The ebook is the first 29 pages of the pdf.

See the video for an introduction to Adventure Knitting, and more about the book making!

There is also a print book of Adventure Knitting for sale over on MagCloud here, or maybe at your local yarn shop!

Notes about materials and skills (for all Adventure Knit items)

  • for all item types, you’ll need to knit in the round

  • depending on item choice, you can use a long circular for magic loop, and/or DPNs, and/or a short circular to knit your piece in the round

  • items range around 1-2 skeins of yarn (standard skein sizes; a large cowl may need 3 skeins) in any weight - some items work better in heavier weight ranges, others in lighter weights, but all patterns are written for any gauge

  • you’ll be working some basic short rows for the construction

  • most techniques will be your choice - your choices may result in cables, or twisted stitches, or stripes, or textures, etc

  • if you need help with the increases in the first section, there is a full video tutorial here
