After much experimentation, this is the happy result: A super-easy toe-up sock recipe designed specifically to work with the characteristics of non-wool sock yarns. As a bonus, it works well with woolly sock yarns too! The pics show a wool version. And it’s MATH FREE.

You’ll notice I call this a recipe and not a pattern. In order to keep math out of it, there is a little trial and error that may result the first time you knit it – specifically in the gusset and heel flap section. If you write down the numbers that end up working for you, you’ll be set for your future sock needs in that size.

Yes, gusset and heel flap, but NO kitchener stitch or grafting, and no picking up stitches!

Because this is a toe-up sock, it can be made to fit any size foot. The numbers shown are starting points for a woman’s foot in the size US 7-9 range. For a man’s foot, cast on more stitches; for a child or toddler, 1/2 to 1/3. The same principles of construction will apply to any size foot. Most important: as you knit it, try the sock on the foot it’s intended to fit. Once you’ve knit a pair for you, you’ll see where to make the adjustments for other sizes.
