‘Autumn Shawl’ is a crescent heart-shaped shawl with a highly textured pattern. It is inspired by nature and by flowers in particular. All the different stitch patterns evoke some aspects of the flora. The cabled spine resembles a long branch full of pointy flower buds, the looped ribbing sts look like long stems full of leaves and the bind-off border features a floral st pattern. The crescent shape makes this shawl easy to wear in a variety of styles. It wraps easily around the shoulders, and it is so cozy that it is sure to become your favorite autumn accessory!

In addition to the pattern, you will need the following materials to knit the Autumn Shawl:

YARN

  • Biscotte Yarns – La Douce MCN (80% superwash merino wool, 10% cashmere and 10% nylon, 350 meters/382 yards, 115 grams/4 oz); 3 skeins. Sample shown in Gris-Gris.

NEEDLES AND NOTIONS

  • Circular needle with cable length of 120 cm (47 in) in size 3.5mm (US size 4) or size needed to obtain gauge
  • One size 6.5 mm (US size 10½) spare needle to bind off sts
  • 3,25 mm (US size 3) crochet hook (optional)
  • 4 removable st markers
  • Cable needle
  • Tapestry needle

GAUGE

7 sts x 31 rows = 2.5 cm/1” and 10 cm/4” worked with smaller needle over Flower Column after blocking.
Gauge is not crucial for this project but keep in mind that different gauges will result in different measurements and yardage.

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS

Wingspan 152 cm/60”, height 58 cm/23”.

NOTES
The shawl starts with a longer modified garter tab that creates a central column of sts for the center spine and it is then worked back and forth in rows from the top down. Simple yarn over increases are worked at the edges and either side of the spine to create a crescent shape; six sts are increased every two rows. The main body of the shawl features an all-over 1x3 ribbing pattern made special by elongated loops. Additionally, a single repeat of a floral smocking st pattern on the border just before the bind-off creates a beautiful, scalloped edge.
