Sizes based on head circumference: To fit approximate head circumference of preemie 11-12” (newborn 13-14”).

Gauge:
5 sts/1” when knitting with worsted weight.
5.5 sts/1” when knitting with dk weight.
6.5 sts/1” when knitting with sport weight.
All gauges are done in stockinette stitch in needles specified or size needed to obtain gauge.

Materials:
For knitting in the round, you will be on double pointed needles (or magic loop). The head circumference is to too small to work on a 16” circular.

Worsted Weight Hat: 65 (75) yards worsted weight yarn, #7 double pointed needles (dpns) or 32” circular for magic loop for knitting in the round, #7 straight needles for knitting flat, stitch markers.

DK Weight Hat: 75 (85) yards dk weight yarn, #5 dpns or 32” circular for magic loop for knitting in the round, #5 straight needles for knitting flat, stitch markers.

Sport Weight Hat: 90 (105) yards sport weight yarn, #3 dpns or 32” circular for magic loop for knitting in the round, #3 straight needles for knitting flat, stitch markers.

All three of the yarns used in the sample hats are soft enough to grace a baby’s head and machine washable to ease the life of a new mother.

The hats are simple and straight forward to knit and work up in a few hours if you’re in a hurry (or a waiting room)! Knit up a bunch and save them for random baby gifts.
