The flowers of the very decorative South African Sugarbush proteas produce copious amounts of nectar, hence the common name “sugarbush”.  The Bashful Sugarbush or Protea pudens grows naturally in the Western Cape area.

Bashful Sugarbush shawl is a triangular, asymmetric lace shawl, worked sideways in one piece with two colours.

Two different stitch patterns are used, separated by garter stitch rows. Pattern 1 is a simple textured stripe pattern, worked in Colour A. Pattern 2, worked in Colour B, is a lace pattern resembling sugarbush flowers.

Most fingering weight yarns are suitable. Yarn for sample shawl is:
Madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light, 100% merino, 420 yd (384 m) per skein, 1 skein Amber Trinket for Colour A and 1 skein Silver Fox for Colour B.

The instructions are for one size only, although it is possible to increase the size by working more repeats of the lace pattern. The instructions for which are given both in the form of a chart and as fully written instructions.
