In my original pattern, and also for the project pictured in the book, I only use one size needle (US 8). It makes no sense to me to change needle size. Arggh.

The cast on I used for the brioche hat is best explained and illustrated in my favorite reference book Knitter’s Handbook by Montse Stanley. She calls it tubular cast on.
