This textured mitten has enough detail to be interesting both to knit and to wear, but isn’t so fussy that it is inappropriate for men. The broken rib pattern is easy enough to learn, and has the advantage of creating small air pockets that hold warmth.

The pattern includes instructions for adult medium and large sizes, which will fit most women and men.

Gauge is indicated as stitch gauge only - row gauge is less important for this pattern. The broken rib stitch is fairly stretchy, so you have a little bit of leeway in your gauge anyway.

You can use any worsted weight yarn you like for these mittens. The pattern was originally developed for a charity project, and was therefore worked up in a washable mostly-acrylic yarn (Plymouth Encore). But if you want to make it in something with some alpaca, or cashmere, or something self-striping, go ahead!

You should be able to get a pair of mittens from 100g (about 200m/220 yards) worsted weight yarn. Modifications such as making the cuff or the hand longer will use additional yarn.

These mittens are worked flat and seamed, perfect for those who are apprehensive about using double-point needles!
