Carol’s Summer Downton Cloche is part of my Vintage Design Collection.

Carol, a good friend and test knitter, suggested that I combine ideas from two of my hats into one. From her suggestion, Carol’s Summer Downton Cloche was created. This hat incorporates a random stitch, a lace stitch and the Vikkel Braid. Carol enjoyed learning and knitting the Vikkel braid and likes the way it frames lacy insets and suggested that the braid be used for not one but two lacy insets. The hat is a good way to learn the technique called the Vikkel Braid. A Vikkel Braid is a round of stitches that creates a braid perpendicular to the previous round. This pattern includes step-by-step instructions for knitting a Vikkel Braid and provides online references. If you do not want to knit the Vikkel braid, there is another option.

Carol’s Summer Cloche has a versatile brim that can be worn with a sassy flip upward at the front, sides or back or it can be worn downward with a slight flair. The random stitch used creates a fabric that is firm and stretchy. A crocheted flower (instructions are included) adds to the vintage look. This is a great hat for all seasons when you want to add a touch of glam to your everyday attire.
