The Story
Cape Breton is home to Beinn Bhreagh, the former estate of Alexander Graham Bell. Here he worked on many of his inventions including the Silver Dart. The Silver Dart took wing from the icy surface of Baddeck Bay in the winter of 1909 making it the first controlled powered airplane flight in Canada and the British Empire.

Come Fly with Me
This shawl is knit flat, from side to side, on a circular needle. The windmill-lace pattern is bordered by a yarn-over cabled edge (bottom edge of shawl) while the upper-central portion of the shawl is worked in Garter stitch. A narrow yarn-over cable separates the Garter stitch section from the lace pattern. A knit-in mock I-Cord provides a lovely finish for the top edge of the shawl.

Stitch counts are included for all increase and decrease rows; increase and decrease stitches are bolded for easy identification.

Yarn Note

  • First picture (grey) shows the shawl knit in Knit Picks Alpaca Cloud Fingering.
  • Second picture (blue) shows the shawl knit in Permin Estelle.

Notions
Stitch marker, 2 cable needles, blocking wires and pins, tapestry needle

Making the Shawl Wider
The shawl may be made wider by extending the centre section. Each additional 4” / 10cm of width will require an additional 51yds / 47m of yarn.

Pattern Files
There are three pattern files included:

  • a charted only version (12 pages)
  • a non-charted only version (19 pages)
  • a supplementary PDF containing larger versions of each of the seven charts
