Frequencies shift and move across the energy spectrum, sent out through the sunny morning in undulating waves of beautiful energy. Peaks like mountains and valleys run along a base signal, mirroring the amplitude and softness of spoken word. On another channel, blips and dashes dance a harmonious and speedy staccato of secret code as they burst forth from the speaker. And then, “CQ, CQ, calling CQ…” a call for connection. Historically, CQ was an open invitation over the HAM radio airwaves to speak with someone, anyone who was listening. A call for one to reach across differences and meet, in community, over the airwaves.

Slip stitch segments mimic amplitude on an airwave, while the dots and dashes represent the morse code my father used to send out when he was a HAM radio operator. This sweater is designed in his honor, and it is a call for connection, communtiy, a CQ, while we are in the midst of isolation in this pandemic.
