This mermaid tail afghan/blanket CROCHET PATTERN is an original design created by me. It is a versatile pattern because it includes multiple options:

  1. Written instructions for creating a ONE-sided Mermaid Tail.
  2. Instructions for creating a POCKET PANEL for the lower legs and feet to provide more coverage if desired.
  3. TWO Tail fin styles for variety if this pattern is being purchased to create multiple afghans.
  4. Instructions for creating this afghan in child size (ages 4-12)
  5. AND instructions for lengthening for older children as well as adults.

This is an intermediate level pattern with detailed instructions, which includes photo tutorials.

Unlike some mermaid tail afghans, my version is wider and longer than average to ensure the most comfort. The mermaid tail body portion of the afghan measures approximately 44-46 inches long for the child-to-teen size and 56-58 inches long for the adult size. It is approximately 26-28 inches wide. (Please note that I give a little “wiggle room” in my sizing range in order to allow for varying stitch tensions (tighter or looser stitches depending on the crocheter).

This afghan can be used as a lap afghan or pulled up to the chest/underarms. For children older than 12, I advise lengthening the afghan to extend its useful lifespan.

The scale stitch included in the pattern is my own version of the stitch, which gives the mermaid tail a fine, scaly textured appearance. It is NOT the crocodile stitch. It is much less bulky than the crocodile stitch, which results in a more cost-effective pattern/project because it uses much less yarn

I had a great deal of fun creating my scale stitch and mermaid afghan patterns and worked very hard to make them available for purchase. I’m excited to share them with others who also share an affinity for crochet as well as mermaids. :)
