This pattern is for a hat inspired by Doctor Who’s greatest nemesis, the Dalek. It consists of alternating black panels and 3D bumps. It’s of intermediate difficulty, and can be easily adapted to suit a range of head sizes. The main pattern is for a large women’s/medium men’s hat, with instructions to make larger or smaller sizes.

There are two ways this hat can be made. The first, for which instructions are given, involves a large number of strands of yarn at one time, and leaves you with a number of ends to tuck in when you’re done. However, this does ensure a more flexible hat with a cleaner back. For the second, you can just work with two strands (one each of black and grey), and pull the colour not in use behind the work. It is important in this case that you keep a very loose tension to the non-working yarn, as this sets the stretch of the hat.
