With the month of December already here, and still another pair of socks on the menu, I chose to go for double stranded.

These December Joy Socks are inspired by the yarn (again) – Who doesn’t like gingerbread cookies? And decorated sugar cookies are all the rage in December!

Challenge yourself to learn a new technique: You’ll be holding the yarn double for most of the sock, splitting the strands when getting to the 2 columns of double knitting. I chose a busy yarn that would most likely give stripes when knit single stranded, and held it double stranded with the colours so aligned that there was almost always one light and one dark colour together. At the double knit stitches I then held them with dark in one hand for the purl sts and light in the other hand for knit sts.

The ribbing gives them an extra stretchy bonus. The edge with the cable is optional, but you’ll need to decide before knitting whether you want it, due to the provisional cast on.

This pattern is a great pattern for learning or practising the Double knit technique - it’s like ladderback jacquard but with a new twist. It also includes 6 stitch wide cables and i-cords and starts with a provisional cast on.

I’ve made a short tutorial video how to do the double knit knits & purls, click here to find it
