The aran weight patterns were designed especially for North Ronaldsay wool, but they will also work with other yarns.

An ideal pattern for using up bits of hand spun - all hats are stretchy so the tension isn’t crucial. And when you get tired of the two basic designs and 8 stitch patterns for the crown and brim, you can use your own favourites.

Aran Weight Yarn:
about 60 (70, 80, 100) g aran weight yarn
5 mm (US 8) needles

Double Knitting Yarn:
about 50 (60, 70, 90) g DK weight yarn
4.5 mm (US 7) needles

Sizes
Aran hats: to fit child (teen, woman, man)
DK hats: to fit toddler (child, teen, woman)

(Note – it is easy to make larger or smaller sizes by adding or subtracting 10 sts on all patterns)
