Knitting a cabled cowl I found that I kept losing the cable needle; it was never really gone but was also never where I reached for it. I made a small flat ditty bag, and use it as the cable needle holder. It is a quick project that can be made with any weight of yarn. The bag is finished with a crocheted or knitted cord, which buttons to the bag, and I have it at a height that’s easy for me to reach while knitting but also not in my way.

The technique used is double knitting with one yarn, on straight needles, to make a bag or pouch. It is a small project suitable for scrap yarn, which I hope might encourage trying a technique that might be new.

Gauge is not important, the width of the bag is determined by the number of stitches cast on (caveat: not if it is felted), the height by the number of rows and the needle size corresponds to the yarn’s thickness. You can choose to keep the purl side as the public side or turn it inside out after binding off the top edge.

Decorate it, felt it, add a drawstring, knit it wide or narrow, short or tall. Mainly, make it your own and have fun.
