This is an easy little pattern with a lot of punch! It looks more difficult than it is. If you have wanted to learn how to knit a mosaic pattern, a little cap like this is a great way to start - and there is always a baby around who needs a nice soft, warm head covering.

As written, this little cap will fit a newborn baby. If a cap is desired for a larger infant, either increase the number of stitches in increments of five and/or use a heavier weight yarn and larger needles, and knit more pattern repeats. If making this for a preemie, use fingering weight yarn and 2.75mm (for the ribbing) and 3.0mm needles for the body of the cap.

I used pink and white for the sample, but any colour combination will do - and the stitch pattern doesn’t scream “girl” or “boy”. Similarly, any soft sport-weight yarn will fit a newborn. I recommend using a machine-washable mostly wool yarn because of wool’s warmth and elasticity characteristics and because I try to avoid petroleum products as much as possible.
