Meet our Elephant. She’s cute, cuddly and totally adorable. This pattern supplies directions for making our Elephant.

This Elephant is suitable for intermediate knitters and assumes an understanding of basic stitches and standard knitting terms as well as understanding the concept for short rows. An understanding of how to sew together stuffed animals is not required, but does make things easier. Our Elephant is knit flat and sewn together using a mattress stitch.

If you’re new to knitting stuffed friends, or are uncomfortable winging it without strict guidelines (that’s OK, we all need good directions sometimes to help us out) you will need approximately 180 m of medium weight grey yarn for the elephant and 3 m of medium weight white yarn for the tusks. With this yarn, use 4 mm (US size 6) needles. You will also need stuffing (we use ecofil or wool) and a tapestry needle to sew your elephant together. This will let you create an elephant that’s approximately 20 cm (8 inches), from the top of it’s head to it’s toes and is 22 cm (9 inches) long.

The beauty of knitting stuffed friends is that this pattern can be knit in any size yarn with accompanying needles. Generally we find using a size or two smaller needles than required by the yarn allows for the tightness needed when you’re stuffing your finished product.
