One of my favorite books is Stella Gibbons’ Cold Comfort Farm, published in 1932. The story centers on Flora Poste & her passion for “tidying up carelessly arranged lives.” Flora sets about to bring order to Cold Comfort Farm & her gloomy relatives who live there. The novel is exceedingly funny, I laugh out loud at some point on most pages. These hand warmers were designed with Flora’s character in mind—they are reversible, warm, & stylish. A slight ruffle at the top and deep ribbing throughout the body, I think Flora would approve. I envision her sporting a pair on one of her solitary nature walks around the Farm or whilst sitting in her little green parlour beside the fire, sipping afternoon tea. The pattern suits my own tidy tastes as well due to the short, no-fuss cuff—I often find fingerless mitt patterns much too lengthy in the cuff, bunching & catching in my winter jacket sleeves. Flora’s Tidy Hand Warmers should never bunch or get stuck in your Velcro jacket sleeves. On most women’s hands the pattern knits up to fall just beyond the knuckles, the part of my hand that is forever susceptible to winter’s dry cold. If you have larger hands, see the Musings section of the pattern for sizing modifications.

This one-size pattern uses hand-dyed Mountain Girl Yarns held doubled (find her shop on Etsy). Mountain Girl is exceedingly soft yarn—Camilla’s hand-dyed colors & color patterns are a bouquet of richness. Slip your hands into a pair of Flora’s Tidy Hand Warmers knit in Mountain Girl Yarns, pull out the novel Cold Comfort Farm, snuggle up in your favorite armchair with a cup of tea, & you’re all set!*
