The technique of fluted crochet dates back to at least the 1890s, and can be seen in Weldon’s Practical Crochet. It can also be seen in vintage pot holder patterns. But is currently not popular, possibly because it is a little tricky to fold the crochet piece to obtain the fluting. The button on the crown of the cap is one that I crocheted over a drapery ring. The button instructions will be a free downloadable pattern on Ravelry after the pattern is tested.
