From the pattern notes: Variegated yarns are beautiful when knit on the diagonal.  No two variegates are the same, either; compare the two very different motifs that emerge in the main project and in the alternate one.  This piece has a lovely symmetry - diagonals intersect in the center.  Although the beginning of the scarf will require your special attention, you’ll find that once the first few rows are set up, it’s completely effortless knitting.
