Friday’s Cowl was inspired by a skein of very squishy handspun Polwarth yarn and a simple stitch that would allow the yarn to shine while being the star of the show. Hence, Friday’s Cowl was born (named so because I started it on Thursday and finished it on Friday).

The stitch pattern, while very simple, is very pretty. So pretty that I simply had to make it the star of an accompanying hat. The first hat (blue) was knit using Cascade Superwash 220 Aran. By knitting the hat in a color lighter than the cowl it allows you to see what the stitch pattern looks like in a light and dark yarn. Works great with either. It also looks great knit in a multi-colored yarn.

The second cowl/hat set I knit was from Cascade Pacific Chunky in the Maple Sky color way. The cowl is longer and the hat a bit slouchier. Still a very pretty set. Pom pom on the hat is optional.

The cowl can be made a number of sizes….from small (30”) to extra large (60”). The key is to weigh your yarn without any labels or tags before you begin knitting. Weighing your swatch is incredibly helpful. It will help you determine how many pattern repeats you can do with the yardage you have on hand. This is a great pattern for handspun yarn or that special skein that you simply love but don’t quite know what to do with. Great for gifts, too!!

The pattern is written instructions only. The stitch pattern is so simple that charts aren’t necessary. It’s easy to remember. Included are instructions for the cowl in various sizes plus the hat using aran weight yarn and chunky weight yarn.
