Design Notes

It’s not always easy to say where inspiration comes from. I tend to collect fibers & colors and then I have this tendency to fidget a lot…… I can never sit still. Things just evolve. I rarely know when I start something what it’s going to be when it’s finished. That’s sort of what happened here.

I was watching old cowboy movies and sorting out my bits of odds and ends of yarn—rolling up colorful balls one by one from left over bits of yarn. Then I started crocheting little strips and rolling them into coins. I realized what an interesting mosaic I had before me when I looked up at what was now on television. The cowboy movies had long ended by then & a beautiful actress was being interviewed on a popular late night talk show wearing her red soled, Christian Louboutin shoes. And then I was inspired!

I immediately began working up the patterned soles. They might have been simple slippers with interesting soles but Southern California was having a particularly cold snap of winter and my feet were freezing on my bare wood floors. I was reminded of trips to Aspen and Santa Fe and once again inspired. So anyway, that’s the best description I can offer of how exactly this design came about.

The boots are easy crochet. If you are new to crochet that’s okay, you should be able to work these up with just a little patience. I want people to learn so I’ll be concise in explaining—the stitching itself really is pretty simple. They are well constructed though so it will take a bit of patience with sewing them all together. It’s so worth it. I think they will last for years and years.

They outside is a simple V-stitch made from simple, readily available, sport-weight yarn. I used acrylic because it’s easy to wash and dry and less absorbent of oils and dirt that might be on the floor. The inside lining is simple double crochet. . I used acrylic for easy care but
this could be done in wool for added warmth if you prefer. I used novelty eyelash yarns for the trim. Some are eyelash woven with pom pom yarn. Others are eyelash woven with ribbon yarn. Others are just simple eyelash. It’s not my favorite yarn to work with but it’s perfect for trimming the boots and it’s only used for a few easy rows so I think it’s really worth it.

I hope you enjoy this design. It is available in all sizes
