Two fearsome creatures from Greek myth

Medusa was a Gorgon whose hair was turned into snakes. She had the power to turn anyone who looked directly at her into stone. She was beheaded by Perseus who used his shield as a mirror to look at her.

The Cyclopes were a race of one-eyed giants. The best known Cyclops was Polyphemus. He captured Odysseus and was blinded when Odysseus tricked him in order to escape.

The puppets are small enough to be manageable for a child but there is enough stretch in the knitting for adult hands. When the fingers are removed the heads keep their shape so the little people can be played with, and put to bed, like dolls (if anyone would want to be kind to such ugly creatures). They can also be displayed standing on a simple post.

As with all our puppets, they are extremely easy to make. Basic crochet skills are needed to make Medusa’s hair (You could use pipe-cleaners as an alternative.)

The puppets in the photos were made from Double Knitting (DK) yarns; other similar yarns can be used.

Note: The circumference of the head should be approximately 21 cm (8.5”) when stuffed.
