Yarn: your desired weight & colors.

Small: Crochet Thread or DMC Craft Thread or Michaels Loops & Threads Craft Cord or a mix or lace weight yarn.
Medium: Fingering Weight or Sock Yarn
Large: Sport weight yarn
Extra Large: Worsted weight yarn

Needle size: One or more sizes smaller then smallest recommended for yarn; use dpns or circulars.
For example:
Small: US 000 (1.5 mm)
Medium: US 0 (2.0 mm)
Large: US 2 (2.25 mm)
Extra Large: US 4 (3.5 mm)

Optional: Crochet Hook one or more sizes smaller than Needles to use for Circular Cast On.

My Needles & Yarn (Small & Medium used apx. ¾ to 2 ounces (21 ½ to 42 ½ grams) of yarn; Extra Large used less than 4 ounces (113 ½ grams) of yarn):
Small: US 000 (1.5 mm) Hawks with threads listed above.
Medium: US 0 (2.0 mm) Santa with Cascade 220 Fingering; Gnome with handspun wool.
Extra Large: US 4 (3.5 mm) Hawks with Red Heart Super Saver; Gnome with handspun wool (beard with acrylic).

Size of mine (I varied number of rounds & how tight I knit for these results.):
Small (3 Hawks): Body – Diameter 1 ¾” to 2”; Height 1 ½” to 2 ½”; Hat - 6 ½” to 8” before football.
Medium (5 Santa): Body – Diameter 2 ½” to 3”; Height 2 ½” to 6 ¼”; Hat - 5” to 9 ½”.
Medium (6 Gnome): Body – Diameter 2” to 4”; Height 2 ½” to 3 ¾”; Hat - 5” to 11”.
Extra Large (2 Hawks, 1 Gnome): Body – Diameter 4 ½”; Height 4 ½”; Hat – 5” to 14” before football.

Body Diameter based on lid used as a base & amount of stuffing.
Hat Height based on chosen pattern & number of rounds knit between decreases.
