Here Be Water Dragons – Garter Stitch Version
is Quinton Lime’s Here Be Water Dragons from January 2015, with very, very tiny changes.
My key changes were to replace “Purl” with “Knit” & to replace “K2tog” with “SSK”.

I like & need detail, but not everyone does, so I’ve provided two choices of the same pattern. If you prefer your pattern written out row by row, download the 8 page version. If you don’t need or want it written out completely, then download the 4 page version.

Gauge & Size depends on needle size, yarn, plus number of repeats in middle.
Yarn: your choice (at least 250 yards if sock weight on size 3 or 4 US needles)

Both Quinton’s original, stockinette version & this garter stitch version will work wonderfully to use yarn in your stash. If you like multiple colors & don’t mind weaving in multiple ends, you could even change your yarn color for each wedge. A new wedge begins each time you cast on 12 stitches at the end of a row.

Needles: two to six sizes larger than recommended needles for yarn. If unfamiliar with the yarn, you may want to make a swatch to make sure your needle size choice makes a soft, flexible sample that you will be able to tie as a scarf.

Size: Repeat Part Two either until scarf / shawlette is about half the length you want, or until a little more than half the yarn is left.

Below are the yarn & needle sizes I used in the photos. Using a digital scale, I’ve added the finished weight of each.

Scarf (Sock Yarn; Color: Seahawks blues, greens, grays; 15 repeats of Part Two)
Materials:
Yarn: Lorna’s Laces, Shepherd Sock yarn, 80% Superwash Merino Wool 20% Nylon, 100 grams, 430 yards, color: Football (Seahawks)
Needles: US #3 (3 ¼ mm)
Size: 67 ½” tip to tip; wedge 2 ¼” across; height 4 ¾”; Weight: 2.4 ounces

Shawlette (Acrylic Yarn; Color: gray; 7 repeats of Part Two - reaches 2 knees but wraps nicely; 2 repeats enough for non wrapping)
Materials:
Yarn: Caron Simply Soft, 100% Acrylic, 198 grams / 7 ounces, 366 yards / 334 meters, color: Grey Heather
Needles: US #10 (6 mm)
Size: 84 ½” tip to tip; wedge 4 ½” across; height 8 ½”; Weight: 2.4 ounces

Should you want to use only one ball of it yarn, only do six of the twelve repeats in the middle section. If you want it longer, add more repeats.
