I love this yarn and wanted the watermelon patterning to be the focal point of this hat. I thought about it for a while and finally settled on a simple stockinette beanie with an I-cord topper. As I was knitting, I found myself singing a song called “Good Watermelon” by Mike Evin (http://mikeevin.com/). And so the Good Watermelon Baby Hat was born!

I wanted the cast on edge to have one solid line of dark green “rind” which would then switch immediately into the brighter green for the next round. To achieve that effect, when I cast on I held the yarn so that the very first CO stitch was the exact transition spot between the two greens, with the dark green on the tail end and the light green running into the ball. It turned out exactly as I’d hoped! The tiny bit of dark green at the tip of the I-cord was just dumb luck, and I couldn’t be more pleased about how it looks.

You can find Abi Grasso’s Watermelon Self Striping Sock Yarn on etsy. She has several other really cool self-striping yarns that would work well with this pattern; I suggest you check out her shop if you have a chance!
