I really love this yarn and I wanted my socks to just scream “WATERMELON!” so I designed this simple, toe-up sock in stockinette stitch. I chose to do an afterthought heel because it fits great, can be easily replaced in the event of wear, and best of all it doesn’t disrupt the cool striping pattern like a heel flap does. As I was knitting, I found myself singing a song called “Good Watermelon” by Mike Evin (http://mikeevin.com/). And so the Good Watermelon Sock was born!

To make a pair of calf-high, medium width men’s size 8 socks I used about 250 yards of MC and 50 yards of CC. I chose to use a contrasting color for the cuffs and toes, but you can knit them all one color and they’ll still look great. All measurements given are the measurements I used to get this size; you can adjust the size of your socks by knitting them longer or shorter, or casting on more or fewer stitches. Each afterthought heel as written uses about 4g of MC, so if you knit your sock longer, be sure to save enough yarn for the heels. I used magic loop (and instructions are written for magic loop), but you can easily convert this pattern to DPNs or two circulars or any other method you prefer for knitting socks.
