A star crocheted in the style of a granny square which can be used to make a retro Christmas tree topper, hanging decoration or ornament, garland, coasters, place mats and table centrepiece for Christmas dinner, wall hanging, throw, doily, applique, aroma diffuser, cushions, gift tags, greetings card toppers or embellishments.

The star can be made in any size from about 5.5cm (2 inches) upwards - the only limitation is the size of the blocking surface you have available. 

The tree topper is double-sided with an internal pocket that the top of the tree is inserted into. My tree topper is approximately 22cm (9 inches) wide but it can be made in whatever size suits your tree.

The 16-page PDF contains written instructions using American and British crochet terms, colour crochet charts and a photo tutorial showing how to crochet the stars and how to turn those stars into various types of decorations including a tree topper, gift tag, cushion etc. It also includes a printable blocking guide and template (instructions are included on what to do if you don’t have a printer) and photo tutorials showing how to make a magic loop and standing stitches.

You will need:

• Yarn in any colour(s). I used Rico Ricorumi DK Cotton. This pattern will work with most yarns, but you must use a yarn that can be soaked in water and pressed with an iron at a medium temperature.
• Crochet hook suitable for your yarn. I used 3mm.
• A tapestry needle (or other blunt needle).
• A blocking mat and pins.
• For the tree topper and any other large stars that will be hung or displayed vertically: 18 gauge florist or sugarcraft wire - the kind that comes in straight pieces - plus some tape for attaching pieces of wire to each other (I used florist tape, but any tape will work).
• For the tree topper and any other stars you want to back: felt sheet and Bondaweb / Vlieseline (or another brand of iron-on adhesive sheet), ironing board and iron. If you are making gift tags or greetings cards, use cardstock rather than felt. I used 216gsm (80 lb cover) cardstock. If using a brand of adhesive other than Bondaweb, check your adhesive is suitable for cardstock.
• For padded stars: quilting cotton fabric or similar, needle and thread (or sewing machine) and stuffing of your choice such as toy and cushion stuffing or wood shavings and Christmassy essential oils.

Useful but not essential:

• Printer, to print the blocking guide and backing templates.
• Sewing machine if making a padded filling / cushion.
