Meet the Great Paxford Socks, adapted from a true vintage UK pattern!
The original 1940s pattern was published by Weldons UK, likely coming out between 1943-1944 when the Make do and Mend campaign was gaining traction. Intended to be made using bits and bobs you have leftover from previous projects, it is a great little scrappy sock that looks adorable and practically flies off the needles! The original pattern is actually knit flat and seamed up the sides with a single color on the underside of the foot. The heel is not reinforced, and it comes in one size.
The Great Paxford socks is like the 2.0 version of this pattern, catered to the modern knitter who does not want to seam a sock -- because really, who in the heck wants to seam a sock… These socks are knit in the round from the cuff down and offer two different types of cuffs! There are three adult graded sizes, and the option to further personalize the fit through the foot length, as well as tips for adjusting width. You have the ability to use as many colors as you want, so have a ball (or 5 balls!!)
