We recently had one knitter express her disappointment with what she expressed as the delicate nature of the Heirloom Pencil Roving Throw. She had knit it and given it to her son as a gift. He proceeded to “use” the throw as a blanket, and with that use, it began to come apart. Although we find the original pattern and finished throw to be lovely, we wanted to offer a sturdier option for those who might knit this piece for a more vigorous blanket using crowd. At Leigh Radford’s suggestion, we have revised the pattern to include a sturdy weight option that is knit from two cakes of Bulky 2 Strand pencil roving at the same time. Using this option will require more fiber, and result in a different gauge and different dimensions for the finished throw.

We would also like to mention that we have successfully substituted Native Twist for Bulky 2 Strand in the light weight option, with no change to the needle size, or the finished dimensions. We were very pleased with the strength and appearance of the finished throw done in Native Twist. Since Native Twist has less yards per skein (150 vs. 200) than Bulky 2 Strand, 7 skeins of Native Twist are required to make the throw.
