A hat with a hem adds an extra layer of warmth around the ears. This pattern provides three sizes, as well as instructions for a taller, slouchy hat or a closer-fitting beanie. Should the knitter want to play around with the gauge or sizing, the crown is divided into six sections for decreasing, so adjust the total JMCO numbers by multiples of 12. Here the Magic Cast-On is used to create a hem without waste yarn or sewing down, and it results in a completely elastic hem. Instructions are included for both a plain hem or a picot hem.
