A unique combination of cables runs up the back of these flip top mittens to make both the look and the knitting interesting. The construction is very simple, and there is a full 2”/5 cm of overlap at the palm to keep wind and snow out of the mitten flap. The length is customized to give a great fit while maintaining the cable pattern right to the end.

Level: Intermediate

Skills required: Long-tail cast on, basic increases and decreases, cables, Kitchener stitch (instructions given for knit/purl grafting)

Instruction type: Charted and fully written

Construction: Worked from cuff to fingers, with a gusset thumb. A lifeline is placed to mark the location for the flip-top. Once the mitt is completed stitches are picked up at the lifeline, and additional stitches cast on, to work the flip-top. The pattern is written generically so as to accommodate all small circumference techniques: dpns/ magic loop/ 2 circulars, both one at a time and two at a time.

Yarn: High Voltage Adapters requires about 175 yds of dk weight yarn. It’s best to use a tightly plied yarn to show off the cables.

Size: These mitts fit snugly but are very stretchy. Flat: 6”/15.25 cm at both wrist and palm. Stretched, up to: 7”/18 cm at the wrist and 8”/ 20 cm at the palm.

Many thanks to my testers for their feedback and my technical editor for all her suggestions.
