A great first-shawl project, this classic triangular shawl (76 x 36) shows to perfection the gorgeous colors of this heavy DK wool yarn.

Sample shown used 720 yards of Solitude Wool’s Suffolk-Dorset blend in three colors: natural (with black flecks), chickweed and watermelon pickle, although any 100% heavy DK wool will work.

Eyelets create the X’s and O’s that give the shawl its name. The border is garter in alternating colors.

The directions are charted and written.

Shawl is started with a garter tab in the natural color and then moves to the X’s/O’s in the contrast (chickweed) and then alternating the cream’s eyelet lace and the contrast X’s/O’s

A 4-stitch garter border is maintained throughout

The final border is garter with alternating colors

The left side of the shawl is a mirror image of the right side – directions explain how to “flip” the stitch patterns to achieve this
