Jacques is a little boy’s waistcoat with soldier motifs. It is knitted in 3 pieces and then seamed at the shoulders before the arm and neck bands are knitted on before the side seams are stitched. The soldier motifs are worked mainly in intarsia with fine details being added using duplicate stitch and embroidery. Finally, the buttons are added.
Currently there are two sizes: 18-19” (46-48 cm) and 20-21” (51-53 cm). More sizes will be added later at which time the price of the pattern will be increased.
Gauge is 28 sts and 36 rows to 10cm worked in stocking stitch. This produces a close but flexible fabric, providing warmth whilst not being stiff.
The waistcoat is knitted on 2.5mm and 3mm needles. You will also need a tapestry needle to work the duplicate stitch and embroidery for the belt loops, epaulettes and french knot buttons on the soldier’s jacket.
The waistcoat is knitted in cotton but could just as easily be knitted in almost any other yarn. Debbie Bliss Eco Baby is used in the sample. 2 balls of white and 1 ball of cream is sufficient to knit either size. Only oddments of the colours used for the motif are required. Colours used in the sample are beige, black, beige and corn. Other colours could be used, especially for the soldier’s jacket.
