This delicate cardigan with a vintage flair is inspired both by Jane Marple’s fondness for knitting soft, pink items and her love of tending to her garden flowers. The dainty yet restrained lace accent is a tribute to her genteel personality while paying homage to her understated and no-nonsense nature. I can imagine her working on this little cardigan while discreetly sleuthing in her seemingly flustered style before masterfully delivering the key to the mystery.

CONSTRUCTION:

This cardigan has a hybrid circular yoke/raglan construction with a lace pattern embellishment and “work-as-you-go” button bands. It is worked seamlessly from the top down in one piece to underarm level. The sleeves are then separated from the body, which is worked in one piece to the hem. The sleeves stitches are returned to the needles and worked in the round. The lace pattern is both charted and written out.

SKILLS REQUIRED:

Casting on, knitting, purling, increasing, decreasing, yarn over, following a simple lace pattern, knitting in the round, picking up stitches, binding off, blocking.

SIZES:

  • 3mo (6mo, 12mo, 18mo // 2yo, 4yo, 6yo, 8yo, 10yo)
  • To fit chest: 16 (17, 18, 19 // 21, 23, 25, 26.5, 28) inches or 40.5 (43, 45.5, 48.5 // 53.5, 58.5, 63.5, 67.5, 71) cm
  • Garment chest circumference at underarms: 19.5 (20.5, 21.25, 22 // 24.25, 26.25, 28.5, 30, 32.75) inches or 49.5 (52, 54, 56 // 61.5, 66.5, 72.5, 76, 83) cm

I recommend choosing a size based on the recipient’s actual chest measurements instead of the age label. You can also choose a size according to how much ease you’d like the garment to have.

YARN REQUIREMENTS:

Approximately 275 (325, 350, 425 // 450, 475, 550, 675, 775) yds or 251 (297, 320, 389 // 411, 434, 503, 618, 709) meters of dk to worsted (8 to 10 ply) weight yarn

Size 3mo sample above is knit in Manos Del Uruguay’s Silk Blend, colorway “Marsala” Please note that this yarn isn’t machine-washable. Any yarn of the same weight that you can get gauge with can be substituted.

NEEDLES:

  • US 7 or 4.5 mm diameter circular needle (or size needed to match stockinette stitch gauge) at least 24 inches or 60 cm in length (Note: you need a circular needle because this garment is knit in one piece, and because the needle will accommodate all the stitches) -matching dpns for sleeves

  • US 6 or 4 mm diameter circular needle (or one size smaller than above) at least 16 inches or 40 cm in length for neckline -matching dpns for sleeve cuff

NOTIONS:

  • 4 markers
  • tapestry needle
  • 2 stitch holders or pieces of scrap yarn
  • 5 (6, 6, 7 // 7, 7, 8, 9, 9) buttons 1/2 inch or 1.2 cm in diameter

GAUGE:

19 sts x 30 rows = 4 inches or 10 cm in stockinette stitch using larger needles, after blocking
Please adjust needle size if needed to achieve the recommended gauge.
