This is a slip-stitch pattern for variegated or thinly striped yarns. It is not a complete pattern but a stitch chart for you to use in your favorite toe up or top down sock pattern. Written instructions are also provided. Familiarity with basic sock construction is assumed. The simple, slipped stitch motif creates a chain-like cable running the length of the sock.

The motif will work with toe up and top down construction. Moreover, it is easily adaptable to yarn weights other than fingering (sport weight, etc.) and it is simple enough to be gender and age neutral. It is also adaptable to projects other than socks. Be sure to experiment with gauge to get the proper size for your project.

The sample pair of socks was knitted with Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Sock Multi. 2.0 mm needles on the foot; 2.25 mm needles above the ankle. I also used the other components listed just above.

I dare you to find a colorway that works even better than the one I used. Have fun!
