“Whistle-Pig” is another name for a groundhog. When alarmed, they use a high-pitched whistle to warn the rest of the colony, hence the name. Groundhogs may squeal when fighting, are seriously injured, or are caught by an enemy.

The seemingly endless cycle in the movie, Groundhog Day, was the inspiration for designing a moebius. This simple stitch pattern looks great on both sides but has texture and is not boring to knit. (Based upon the Parenthetical Rib pattern from Barbara Walker’s 2nd Treasury)

A fairly tight gauge is recommended for good stitch definition; sample gauge approx. 7 st/inch with fingering weight yarn. Other yarns will yield different gauges so plan accordingly.

Fingering or DK weight yarn is recommended.

I used less than one skein of Madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light (420 yards) and a 40” US 2 (2.75 mm) circular needle, casting on 324 sts. The finished sample is a 45“ loop and I had plenty of yarn remaining to either make it longer or wider. Knitter’s choice.

The stitch pattern is a multiple of 12. The size of the moebius may be adjusted in these increments: For a longer scarf, cast on more stitches; for a shorter scarf, cast on fewer. It is assumed the knitter is familiar with the Moebius Cast On. A number of excellent tutorials are available on YouTube if help is needed.
