Knit a lacy cover for any size rock, egg, pendant, etc.

There are many patterns for crocheting a lacy cover for a rock or egg & crocheting one is usually much easier & faster. Plus, the freeform capabilities of crocheting gives such a huge advantage for covering any size 3 dimensional object.
But, a friend wanted to make a lacy knit cover. With my huge collection of old doily patterns, both knit & crochet, I thought it would be easy to begin with the middle of one. Nope, the beginnings are all solid & no use for such small objects. I searched next in my 100’s of books, Ravelry & the internet with no luck.
So, I gave up & started by adding yarn overs on the first round, then went on experimenting until I came up with the attached.
4 large rocks, 4 small rocks, 1 soap bar, & 14 eggs were covered during this exercise :)

The cover begins in the middle with a circular cast on, increasing every other round to create a circle shaped wide enough to fit.
Think of it as a lacy circle divided into eight parts. It’s the final weaving through the last round of stitches with the yarn tail to cover your child’s favorite rock and turn it into a decorative paperweight, doorstop, necklace, etc.
