The pattern is written such that any yarn or thread can be used. The exact number of repeats you make will determine the final size of the shawl. As it is worked in one piece from the back of the neck, you may choose to stop when you are satisfied with the drape and size of the shawl.

To gauge the amount of yarn required:
The brown and lilac coloured samples shown here were made using approximately 800g of a fingering weight cotton yarn. That amounted to about 2160 m or 2362 yards. The finished size of these samples are 36 inches from the back of the neck to the tip of the shawl. The total “wingspan” is about 72 inches.
The multi-coloured sample was made using Poems Sock Yarn. It took 5 balls (total = 500g) of sock yarn for this sample. That amounted to 2095 m or 2295 yards. It is slightly smaller than the other two. It measures about 33” from the back of the neck to the tip and total “wingspan” is about 66 inches.
