This is the second installment in my Land and Air Pattern Set series. This time you’ll learn how to create a train locomotive and a fighter airplane, designed in the style of the classic WWII-era P51 Mustang. These are easy/intermediate level toy patterns. You’ll need to know how to knit in the round on double pointed needles, pick up stitches and seam using mattress stitch. There’s also a small amount of stranded (fairisle) colorwork on the nose section of the plane - however it’s decorative, so you can replace this with a solid color if you’re not comfortable with this technique. When knitted with worsted weight yarn and US Size 6 needles, the toys measure between 5 and 6 inches long, so they’re very portable and easy for little hands to hold. Of course, you can adjust the yarn weight to make a larger or smaller toy, provided that you also adjust needle size accordingly. Both vehicles look good enough to display, so they don’t have to go back in the toy box when playtime is over! They’re both fairly quick knits and use a reasonably small amount of yarn and stuffing, so they’re great for customizing colors.

The patterns themselves include both written instructions and an extensive photo tutorial. I’ve separated them into two PDF files for ease of printing and use, so when you order, please make sure that you download both!

Happy Knitting!
