This pattern is for any weight yarn! A shawl constructed in sections, this can be made in any gauge (no swatching needed!) and in any size you like, with variation options based on your use of colors. The sections are all connected modularly, with no picked up stitches or sewing.

Weave in your ends as you knit it (tutorial included) and when you finish the final section, your shawl is done!

This stripy asymmetrical shawl can look very different in different yarn weights and sizes, as the details will be repeated different numbers of times depending on these specifics. Use a fine weight yarn for a more delicate shawl with smaller chains, or a heavy weight for a bold look with fewer large chains.

This pattern was originally released as a mystery shawl knit-a-long in October 2012, divided into the 5 sections. That was fun, but it will be easier now that you can see what it’s supposed to look like!

This pattern is complex, but it shouldn’t be hard if you read carefully, follow each step as it’s written, and trust the pattern! Be sure to read all the notes, take a look at the process photos, and pay attention to whether your piece is looking right along the way. Take it slowly, and have fun!

Any weight yarn can be used to make any size shawl - small(medium, large) sizes are approximately 36(48, 60) inches / 90(120, 150) cm wide, and it’s super easy to modify to make different sizes as well, like extra large.

• The large yellow+green sample is in Anzula For Better or Worsted, in main colors Curry and Pesto, with some design details in Bark and Navy.

• The medium grey sample is in Cascade Soft Spun (aran weight, but knits up more like a chunky), a grey background with 4 different colors as the contrasting.

• The small purple-y sample is in Black Trillium Merilon Sock yarn, in a subtle dye lot of the Star variegated colorway, with a recycled white silk as the contrasting.

• Yarn in any weight - enough yardage in your weight for your size choice, here are approximate total yardage guidelines for smallmedium, large:
• Sock:  300-500(400-700, 500-900) yd / 275-450(370-650, 450-820) m
• Worsted:  250-300(350-450, 450-600) yd / 230-275(320-410, 410-550) m
• Chunky:  200-250(250-350, 350-450) yd / 180-230(230-320, 320-410) m
• A bit more than 3/4 of total yardage is MC (the main/background color), and a bit less than 1/4 of total is CC (the contrasting color for the design details); if using two MCs, each is approximately 1/2 the total MC yardage
• Needles sized to match your yarn (see gauge notes) - a long circular is recommended, to comfortably hold all your stitches
• 5 stitch markers, in different colors so you know which is which

The pattern includes photo tutorials for the m1 methods used, shadow wraps short rows technique, and weaving in your ends while you knit!
