Sometimes the unexpected happens, especially when knitting collaboratively from an assortment of stashed yarns. This felted bag is designed to be knit with two strands of worsted weight, or one strand of bulky 100% wool yarn, making the fulled/felted fabric dense and the bag suitable for heavy use. The colors and stripes can be easily customized to reflect the personality of the recipient. A sturdy bag, it makes a lovely gift.

Lemons! Once our collaborative bag was felted, it was discovered that the bottom two pink stripes were knit with acrylic yarn and did not felt. Voila! A design element was born. More details on creating this welted element are included in the pattern.

Bag Overview

  • Finished dimension 12 inches by 18 inches (will vary a bit depending on desired density of the felting)
  • Knit with double strand 100% worsted wool (2000 yards needed) or one strand bulky 100% wool (1000 yards needed)
  • For welting, one skein of coordinating acrylic yarn needed
  • Gauge is not essential to this bag as it will be felted to the desired fabric.
  • Three row, two color knitted braid accents top of the bag
  • I-cord handles are knit separately and attached before felting
  • Directions are included to customize the bag with your colors or follow the pattern for the stripes shown in the sample bag

The pattern includes Tips for Collaborative Knits and a Lemons to Lemonade History Sheet to record the progress of this one of a kind gift.
