When Barbara from Dibadu asked me to create a pattern for her next Advent Calendar, I was delighted. It was a challenge to come up with a design that would allow the knitter to finish a module with the amount of yarn given in one door. Also the modules needed to be of the same size. Finally I came up with Loch Lochy, a swirly affair. The form was born and needed to be filled with the „breath of color“. And what a breath of fresh air Barbara’s color suggestions were. We shared a lot of drafts and images, talked on the phone to bring Loch Lochy into being. It was so much fun to create a knitting design together with the yarn designer.

Since the Advent Calendar is a limited sales campaign, we both decided to offer more color options. Therefore, you can still knit Loch Lochy even if you have missed out on the Advent Calendar sales. There are four versions available.

Version 1: Advent Calendar – created for 23 balls of 20g/80m plus one ball of contrast yarn of 100g/400m
Version 2: 5 + 1 – created for 5 skeins of 100g/400m with gradually changing yarn + 1 skein of 100g/400m contrast color
Version 3: 4 + 1 – created for 4 skeins of 100g/400m with gradually changing yarn + 1 skein of 100g/400m contrast color
Version 4: Yarn A + Yarn B – created for two colours (two fast or slow changing color gradients or two solids) 200g/800m each

Of course, you can also knit this pattern with assorted mini skeins and/or yarn leftovers. Knock yourself out. You will find a graphic on page 3 that you can color in if you like. You don’t have to match the swatch, but in case you don’t you will probably need more yarn. Of course, you will achieve the best result using Dibadu Tiny Merino. The shawl measurements are 17.75“/45cm depth x 85“/216cm length, so fairly large.

Loch Lochy is fully reversible. One side will higlight Yarn A at the border and the other will highlight Yarn B. It is a modular knit but there is no seaming involved as you will join all the modules as you go. You will find photo tutorials on all the necessary techniques for joining the modules. All instructions are offered in written and charted form It is a lenghty pattern. If you tend to print out your patterns I recommend you leave out the photo tutorials. They will use up a lot of ink and you will only need them once or twice. Also, the knitting actios are better to distinguish on a screen in full color.

Merry Christmas and happy knitting
