Maroon Socks
This design is part of a very special e-book called Care Package.
I have knitted so many socks for my boy over the course of the years. He is the most knit-worthy person in my life. He cherishes every pair, and he wears hand-knit socks most days, even in summer time!
As time approached for him to leave for university, I thought I’d make him a pair using his university color. He is going to University of Chicago, and their color is maroon. Perhaps you’d like to make yours in a color that’s very meaningful to you? That means belonging?
These socks are knitted from the cuff down, with a heel flap and gusset.
SIZES
Small (Medium, Large). To fit a foot circumference of approx. 7½ (8½, 9¾)” 19 (21.5, 24.5) cm. Shown in size Large.
MATERIALS
Yarn: 1 skein of fingering weight sock yarn.
The sample was made using Raval, by Greta and the Fibers 75% Merino/25% Nylon; 438yd (400m); in 100g, which is now discontinued.
You will need 360 (400, 436) y 334 (366, 398) m of fingering weight yarn.
Tips for substituting
You can use any fingering weight yarn you like, but your socks will last longer if you choose a yarn with multiple plies, and with a certain amount of nylon, polyamide, or other hardwearing fiber like mohair or silk.
Needles: US 1 (2.25 mm) dpns or long circular needles for magic loop (my preferred length for magic loop is a 32”/80cm long needle).
Other notions: Cable needle, stitch markers, tapestry needle.
GAUGE
36 sts and 50 rounds to 4” 10 cm in Stockinette St on US 1 2.25 mm needles.
